The Legacy We Will Become — A Visual Chronicle of Spain's Energy Transition

A tribute to a fading era and the testimony of those embracing the challenge of a new revolution

    About the Project

    The Legacy We Will Become

The Legacy We Will Become is a photographic, documentary and exhibition project by Álvaro Ybarra Zavala that ventures into the heart of a historic revolution: the industrial transformation redefining Europe. A revolution that is quiet yet, at the same time, unstoppable — driven by the energy transition, digitalization and a profound reshaping of our productive, social and urban systems.

More than documenting a change, the project moves through it. It observes from the territory, from the people, from the landscapes where the energy of the past still breathes and the future is already beginning to take shape.

Conceived as a visual trilogy, The Legacy We Will Become traces three essential moments of this revolution: the end of a fading era, the birth of a new paradigm, and the challenges that will define the world we are building. It is neither a technical chronicle nor a distant account. It is a generational gaze. An exercise in memory. And, above all, an invitation to reflect on the shared responsibility of imagining — and deciding — the future we will leave behind amid this transformation.

    I

    Origen

Ventures into the dismantling of the great infrastructures that for decades sustained an energy model now superseded. It captures the mark this quiet revolution leaves on the land, on communities, and on those who forged the country's industrial identity. A visual testimony that aspires to preserve the memory of this transformation for generations to come.

    II

    Momentum

Europe is undergoing a profound revolution that is redefining how it produces energy, inhabits the land and connects. Driven by the energy transition and digital transformation, a new industrial era is emerging. It moves into that change and observes its impact on people: new trades, new ways of living, and new opportunities already laying the foundations of the future.

    Horizonte

Europe faces a decisive revolution. Driven by increasingly urgent social, environmental and territorial challenges, it embarks on a transformation that goes beyond energy and redefines how it produces, inhabits and organizes itself. It moves into that turning point and observes a continent that, between transition and opportunity, seeks answers to the present while building a new future.

Through a humanist and committed photographic language,
it gives a face to the protagonists of this revolution
    and its transformation.
