Energy storage: 22.5 GW to stabilize the grid

The 2023 PNIEC sets a target of 22.5 GW of energy storage by 2030, an ambitious figure that includes batteries, reversible pumped hydro storage and the thermal storage capacity of concentrated solar power plants.

Storage is the key piece that allows high renewable penetration without compromising security of supply. Large-scale batteries offset solar and wind variability, storing surpluses during peak production hours and releasing them when demand requires.

Demand management becomes another fundamental pillar: demand-response technologies, vehicle-to-grid (V2G) and energy communities that make consumption more flexible will help optimize the electricity system without needing to oversize generation.

Distribution and transmission grids will require significant investment to absorb distributed, bidirectional generation. Some 17% of the PNIEC's total investment — more than €52 billion — will go toward modernizing energy grids.

Spain is already a benchmark in pumped-hydro storage, and the new generation of lithium-ion batteries and emerging technologies such as gravity-based or compressed-air storage will widen the range of available solutions.
