Offshore wind: 3 GW on Spain's maritime frontiers

Within the 62 GW of wind power planned for 2030, the PNIEC includes for the first time a specific target of 3 GW of offshore wind, marking the start of an industry with enormous potential along the Spanish coast.

Spain has more than 7,900 km of coastline and exceptional wind conditions, especially along the Atlantic seaboard and the Canary Islands. However, the depth of the continental shelf requires floating technologies, a field in which Spain already has landmark pilot projects.

Floating offshore wind allows turbines to be installed in deep waters where fixed foundations are not viable, opening vast ocean areas to power generation. Spain has the opportunity to lead this emerging technology globally.

The development of offshore wind creates complex industrial value chains: platform manufacturing, subsea cable laying, port logistics, and operation and maintenance. Spanish shipyards and ports are positioning themselves to capture this activity.

Marine Spatial Planning Plans (POEM) regulate the areas suitable for offshore wind, reconciling energy generation with fishing, shipping, marine biodiversity and other uses of maritime space.
