Green hydrogen: 12 GW of electrolyzers by 2030

Green hydrogen is emerging as one of the fundamental energy carriers of the updated PNIEC. Spain has set itself the goal of reaching 12 GW of electrolyzers to produce renewable hydrogen before 2030, a target consistent with European ambitions.

Green hydrogen is key to decarbonizing sectors that are difficult to electrify directly: heavy industry (steel, cement, chemicals), shipping and aviation. Producing it at scale in Spain draws on the country's abundant solar and wind resources.

Renewable hydrogen production is one of the factors driving growth in electricity demand, forecast to rise 34% relative to 2019 — a much larger increase than the first PNIEC's projection of barely 5%.

Spain has unique competitive advantages: high solar irradiation, onshore and offshore wind potential, port infrastructure for exports, and a strategic geographic position as a bridge between Europe and Africa for future hydrogen corridors.

Green hydrogen projects are attracting significant industrial investment, contributing to the country's reindustrialization and the creation of local value chains in electrolysis, storage and hydrogen-transport technologies.
