Electric mobility: 5.5 million vehicles by 2030

The updated PNIEC raises the target for the electric-vehicle fleet to 5.5 million by 2030, a quantitative leap that reflects the acceleration of transport electrification across Europe and falling battery costs.

For the first time, the plan incorporates specific actions on rail, aviation and shipping, recognizing that decarbonizing transport requires addressing every mode, not just the private car.

Electrification of the economy will reach 35%, up from the 32% projected in the original document. This increase translates into rising electricity demand that, far from being a problem, is an opportunity to absorb growing renewable output.

Public and private charging infrastructure is a necessary condition for the mass rollout of electric vehicles. The plan includes incentives for installing charging points in residential communities, workplaces and public roads.

Electric vehicles do more than decarbonize transport: through vehicle-to-grid (V2G) technology, they can act as distributed storage, feeding energy back to the grid at times of high demand and charging during periods of renewable surplus.
