2030 target: 81% of electricity to come from renewables

One of the flagship actions of the 2023 PNIEC is the push for renewable energy and storage to improve their integration into the electricity system. The goal is for 81% of electricity generation in 2030 to come from renewable sources.

By 2030, Spain expects to have 62 GW of wind power installed — including 3 GW of offshore wind — 76 GW of solar photovoltaic capacity — including 19 GW of self-consumption — plus 1.4 GW of biomass and 22.5 GW of storage, also factoring in the contribution of concentrated solar power.

The share of renewables rises to 48% of total final energy consumption, not just electricity. This leap is made possible by the massive rollout of installed capacity and improvements in storage and demand-management technologies.

Self-consumption has become one of the most dynamic drivers: installed self-consumption capacity has multiplied sixteenfold since 2019, and the target is to reach 19 GW by 2030, democratizing energy generation and reducing dependence on the centralized grid.

Spain leads Europe in signing Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) and has broken records in employment, exports and installed capacity in solar photovoltaic energy, cementing its position as a continental benchmark in renewables.
