Energy independence: from 73% to 50% external dependence

One of the main advances of the updated PNIEC is the increase in energy independence. Spain plans to raise domestic energy production to 50% of the total, up from 27% in 2019, drastically reducing its vulnerability to geopolitical crises.

The geopolitical shift triggered by the war in Ukraine (REPowerEU) has accelerated the urgency of this transformation. Dependence on imported fossil fuels is not only an economic risk but a strategic weakness that the energy transition corrects.

Projected savings on fossil fuel imports total €86.75 billion over the whole period of the plan — resources that are reinvested in the national economy, generating a virtuous cycle of investment and local employment.

Of the total €308 billion investment, 37% will go to renewable energy, 28% to savings and efficiency, 17% to energy grids and 17% to the electrification of the economy, shaping a diversified and resilient energy system.

Spain ranks among the leading global recipients of greenfield projects and is first in the EU, attracting industrial investment thanks to the competitiveness of its renewable energy and the stability of its regulatory framework.
